In a large number of industries people
are busy improving the efficiency, quality and safety at work. Mobile
communication often plays a very important part in this.
In those areas in which much noise is present and the wearing of ear
protectors is obligatory, communication, due to the noise and ear protectors, is
seriously disturbed. This results in the fact that the call is not heard, people
misunderstand each other, irritation arises and messages are misinterpreted –
with al its consequences.
Now it is possible to take in the sound of the voice through the ear by electronic means. GROENEVELD Elcea has integrated this principle in its existing ear protectors. A special transducer has been developed for this, which can both serve as telephone (loudspeaker) and microphone. This transducer is so small that this can be build-in inside the ear protectors "in the ear" as it were.
HOW DOES IT WORK
The ELACIN DuoCom is worn in one ear. A cable is carried behind the ear, hardly noticeable, and is less vulnerable because of this. By the acoustic closed circuit between transducer and the auditory duct (ear drum) the noise is shut off. Both the information to be received and the to be transmitted are free from environmental noise because of this.
The walkie-talkie can remain attached ‘to the belt’ during a call. Responding to a call is done by a Push-To-Talk button, which may be attached to one’s clothes elsewhere, within easy reach. The other ear is provided with an ear-piece in which an acoustic filter is placed, fine tuned to the environmental noise. Through this ear the communication with the immediate environment is secured.
Advantages
| The call is heard much faster | |
| The call can be understood better | |
| There is no need to shout | |
| Minimal disturbance of the activities by responding quicker (there are situations in which this advantages can be life-saving, such as with the fire-brigade, bomb squad, etc) | |
| Minimal hindrance when wearing the device | |
| Communication with the immediate environment remains intact |

COMPONENTS
ELACIN DuoCom
Made to measure ear protector (for left or right ear) provided with a two-way communication, made out of black FlexFit silicone.
The DuoCom consist of:
| A two-way transducer | |
| Acoustic filter (standard ML01-filter) | |
| Handle | |
| 900 mm cable for connection to Push-To-Talk button |
Push-To-Talk button
The PTT button serves to switch the
communication from receiving to transmitting.
It has been provided with,
| Connector for connecting to DuoCom | |
| Electronics for reinforcement of the (transmitting) signal of the DuoCom to the radio system | |
| cable with connector to the radio system |
Optional
| A 3-position switch to adjust the transmitting signal |
The electronics and the connector of
the PTT button should be fine-tuned to the radio system to be used.
(The PTT button is a Ceotronics product)
Radio system
The DuoCom with the PTT button is compatible with most industrial radio systems.
Working
The ELACIN DuoCom
is only destined for one ear. Dependent on the noise level and local legislation
an extra ear protector is necessary to protect the other ear.
Messages which normally speaking are received by means of the speaker of
the radio system, are now received directly in the ear. Since the ear protector
muffles the environment sound, the volume can be set at a lower level than
normal. This results to less distortion, which leads to an improvement of the
speech audibility.
In order to respond to a message you only have to push the PTT button when
talking.
When the PTT button is pushed:
| The two-way transducer in the ELACIN DuoCom is activated | |
| The voice sound is caught via the eardrum by the ELACIN DuoCom | |
| The signal is reinforced by the electronics of the PTT button and carried to the radio system | |
| The microphone in the radio system is then switched off. |

ELACIN DuoCom works great with one-way
radios/walkie-talkies.

Application
In the frame of ear protection the above-mentioned muffling data should be applied. This means that (dependent of the frequency spectrum ) at a maximum allowed noise load of 80 dB, approximately ( 80+20=) dB environmental noise is acceptable.
However, for an optimal speech audibility the environmental noise should be approximately 10 dB lower.
So:
Maximum safety level approximately 100 dB(A)
Maximum communication level approximately 90 dB(A)
